To help ensure safety and preparedness during field activities, students of the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) participated in a First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS) Lecture and Demonstration conducted by the Philippine Red Cross on 19 June 2026 at the NIGS Multipurpose Room.
The activity provided participants with an opportunity to learn essential emergency response skills that may prove valuable during fieldwork and other outdoor activities. Through interactive discussions and practical demonstrations, students were introduced to the fundamentals of first aid, emergency assessment, and basic life support procedures.
Leading the training were Philippine Red Cross resource persons, Ms. Vanessa C. Diwa, Mr. Kamal A. Gunawardana, and Mr. Shou D. Ogata. Drawing from their experience in emergency response and public safety, the trainers guided participants through various scenarios and demonstrated proper techniques for responding to medical emergencies.
A key feature of the activity was the hands-on demonstration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other life-saving procedures. Students actively participated in the exercises, gaining practical experience and a deeper appreciation of the importance of preparedness and quick action during emergencies.
As NIGS students prepare for their fieldwork activities during the Midyear Term 2026, the training served as a timely reminder that safety remains an integral part of geological field education. By equipping students with basic emergency response skills, the Institute continues to promote a culture of preparedness, responsibility, and resilience both in the field and within the community.
