The National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) of the University of the Philippines Diliman was named one of the finalists in the 2025 Gawad Pangulo para sa Natatanging Akademikong Institusyon, recognizing its continued excellence in academics, research, and public service.
The final round included a live presentation on 04 June 2025, where finalists shared their accomplishments over the past five years with a distinguished panel of judges. Representing NIGS were Director Dr. Noelynna T. Ramos, and Deputy Director for Academic Affairs Dr. Jillian Aira S. Gabo-Ratio.
NIGS highlighted its rigorous undergraduate and graduate programs, major curricular reforms, and the expansion of specialized electives aligned with national development goals. The Institute also showcased its growing research portfolio in hazard mapping, marine geology, and resource evaluation—alongside its sustained contributions to geoscience education, extension services, and community-based disaster resilience.
Among the Institute’s key achievements are the implementation of revised BS and MS Geology programs; the introduction of new elective offerings in fields such as environmental geology, petroleum geology, and geostatistics; consistently high performance in the Geology Licensure Examination; wide-reaching public geoscience outreach through hazard assessments, webinars, and policy support; and institutional partnerships with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB), and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
While NIGS was not among the top three awardees during the 20 June 2025 awarding ceremony, its selection as a finalist underscores the Institute’s institutional strength and enduring commitment to scientific excellence in the service of the Filipino people.
This recognition reaffirms the mission of NIGS to advance geoscience research, nurture the next generation of field-ready geologists, and contribute meaningfully to national development.
