The National Institute of Geological Sciences (UP-NIGS) conducted a Gender Sensitivity Training and Anti-Sexual Harassment Seminar for its students on 05 June 2025 at NIGS Multipurpose Room. The training aims to equip students with proper knowledge in basic concept on sex, gender, and SOGIESC and familiarization with the UP Anti-Sexual Harassment Code that are vital when facing diverse social dynamics and isolated settings upon their deployment in fieldworks.

The program began with the introduction of the resource speaker, Ms. Patricia Sybil Aurelio from the UP Diliman Gender Office. She discussed key topics such as the distinction between sex and gender, gender roles, biases, and toxic masculinity in society. Students were actively engaged as she fostered a collaborative atmosphere, particularly during discussions on SOGIESC and gender-based violence (GBV) in both academic settings and fieldwork.

The seminar continued with a discussion led by Ms. Ma. Rizza Mae Narvaez, a representative from the UP Diliman Office of Anti-Sexual Harassment. She gave a basic orientation on sexual harassment and explained the key provisions of the UP Anti-Sexual Harassment Code. Furthermore, she introduced the students to the basic provisions of the Safe Spaces Act (RA 11313).

These seminars were concluded with students being equipped with basic tenets of gender-responsiveness and gender sensitivity as well as university’s policy provision in anti-sexual harassment—beneficial in the prevention and response to inappropriate behavior, and ensuring a safe, inclusive, and professional environment, particularly in the field.
