Honoring Success and Service: NIGS Holds 2026 Recognition Program & Pinning Ceremony

The National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), University of the Philippines Diliman, held its 2026 Recognition Program & Pinning Ceremony to honor the BS Geology and MS Geology graduating class of 2026; and to recognize the dedicated service of its retiring faculty and staff members. The event brought together faculty, staff, graduates, families, and guests in celebrating academic achievement and service to the Institute.

The NIGS Director, Dr. Noelynna T. Ramos, formally welcomed the attendees and congratulated the graduates for reaching an important milestone in their academic journey. Dr. Ramos also expressed the Institute's gratitude to the retirees whose years of dedication have contributed to the growth of NIGS and the advancement of geoscience education and research.

Following Dr. Ramos' welcome remarks, the Pinning Ceremony took place, symbolizing the successful completion of the students’ academic journey and their readiness to apply the knowledge, skills, and values they have gained to the field of geosciences. Accompanied by their parents or guardians, the graduates received their pins from the senior faculty in recognition of their perseverance and the unwavering support of their families throughout their studies.



The Institute also recognized outstanding students for their academic excellence and research achievements: Mr. Joshua Godwin Cuevas (Most Outstanding MS Geology Graduate), Mr. Joeven Austine S. Calvelo and Mr. Oliver Paul C. Hasalan (Excellence in Graduate Studies awardees), Ms. Jayce Eunice B. Salvador (Most Outstanding BS Geology Graduate), Ms. Alice Joanne G. Paranas (Leticia Shahani Best Undergraduate Thesis), and Ms. Moreen Ashlei B. Lacsamana (Philippine Mining and Exploration Association Best Undergraduate Thesis). Student representatives from the BS Geology, Ms. Jemimah Caryl C. Abalajon, and MS Geology, Mr. Joshua Godwin Cuevas, shared messages reflecting on their experiences at NIGS and expressing gratitude to the mentors, families, and classmates who accompanied them throughout their academic journey.

A special portion of the ceremony honored the Institute's 2026 retirees: Mr. Pepito R. Cortez (Administrative Aide IV (Driver II)), Mr. Ramon D. Rosario (Precision Instrument Technician III), Dr. Sandra G. Catane (Professor 12), and Dr. Carlo A. Arcilla (Professor 12). Through tribute videos, citations, and the awarding of plaques, the Institute recognized their decades of dedicated service and lasting contributions to teaching, research, administration, and the continued development of NIGS.




The closing remarks were delivered by the Deputy Director for Academic Affairs, Dr. Jillian Aira S. Gabo-Ratio, who congratulated the graduates on reaching a significant milestone and encouraged them to uphold the University's values of honor, excellence, and service as they pursue their future endeavors. Dr. Gabo-Ration also expressed the Institute's heartfelt appreciation to the retiring faculty and staff for their years of dedication and invaluable contributions to NIGS. 

The 2026 Recognition Program and Pinning Ceremony celebrated not only the achievements of the graduating class but also the Institute's enduring legacy of excellence, mentorship, and public service, reaffirming its commitment to developing geoscientists who will contribute to the advancement of the field.
