The National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) conducted its Curriculum Review and Revision Workshop on 30–31 August 2025 at Doña Jovita Garden Resort in Calamba, Laguna. The two-day workshop gathered both senior and junior faculty members to review and revise the curricula of the BS, MS, and PhD Geology programs. The administrative staff provided technical and logistical support throughout the workshop.

On the first day, faculty members engaged in dynamic discussions on reviewing the existing program structure and proposing revisions to the BS and MS Geology curricula. The second day was dedicated to reviewing the PhD Geology program curriculum and developing its track options. Discussions were centered on strengthening research training, promoting interdisciplinary learning, and alignment with current academic standards, evolving industry demands, and national development goals. The faculty members reached a consensus on proposed revisions and finalization of the BS Geology curriculum. Succeeding workshops aim to finalize the proposed revisions to the MS Geology curriculum and curriculum design of the PhD Geology track options (e.g., Regular PhD, PhD by Research).

The workshop underscored NIGS’ commitment to academic excellence by producing skilled, competent, and well-rounded graduates. By working together, the faculty ensured that the Geology programs remained responsive to the evolving demands of geoscience education, research, professional practice, and public service. The workshop concluded with a spirit of collaboration, marking another milestone in advancing NIGS’ role as the country’s leading institution in geoscience education and research.

The Curriculum Review and Revision Workshop forms part of NIGS’ activities that receive support from the UPD Quality Assurance Office (QAO) through its 2025 Academic Program Improvement (API) Fund.

About the Academic Program Improvement (API) Fund

The API Fund, first established in 2000, was primarily directed towards the continuous development and improvement of academic programs of all the Constituent Universities (CUs) of the University of the Philippines, with the ultimate goal of achieving academic excellence through the strengthening of the link and integration of education, research and creative work, and public service. The API fund can be utilized for curriculum development, pedagogy, and technology reforms, which will enable UP’s degree programs to lead academic standards within the changing context of local, national, regional, and global developments that have had a profound impact on universities worldwide. The allocation for UP Diliman is being administered by the UPD Quality Assurance Office (QAO).
