Researchers from the NIGS Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) Laboratory successfully conducted a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Seminar-Workshop in Marinduque Province on June 9, 2026. The activity was co-organized with the Marinduque Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) as part of ongoing efforts to enhance local capacities in geohazard assessment and disaster risk reduction.

The seminar-workshop introduced participants to the fundamental principles and applications of GPR, a non-invasive geophysical technique used for subsurface investigations. The training combined lectures on GPR theory with hands-on equipment demonstrations, basic data processing workflows, and radargram interpretation exercises. Participants also learned how GPR can be applied to geohazard investigations, including the identification and mapping of potential fault structures and other subsurface features.

The activity was led by Dr. Leo T. Armada, together with research associates Marc Alvior, Maui Apundar, and Denise Salazar. Attendees included personnel from the Marinduque PDRRMO and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (MDRRMOs) from across the province.

The seminar-workshop forms part of NIGS’ extension program aimed at strengthening the technical capabilities of local government units in disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and geohazard assessment. The activity was supported through Dr. Armada’s DOST-funded SeiScan_PH Project and an OVCRD Extension Grant.
