NIGS Joins Project RISE to Strengthen Mathematics and Science Education in Basilan

Faculty members from the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), UP Diliman, participated in Project RISE: Reinforcing Instruction in Mathematics and Science Education in Basilan on 20-24 July 2026 at Sitti Auna Resort, Maloong, Lamitan City. The workshop aims to enhance the competencies of Senior High School (SHS) Mathematics and Science teachers in the province by providing updated content, pedagogical approaches, and hands-on learning experiences that will help improve mathematics and science education in Basilan.

Representing NIGS in the workshop were Dr. Jillian Aira Gabo-Ratio (Deputy Director for Academic Affairs), Dr. Gabriel Theophilus V. Valera (Deputy Director for Research and Development) and Mr. John Kenneth Badillo (Instructor), together with the various units of UP Diliman College of Science in delivering lectures, workshops, and learning sessions for teachers from the Schools Division of Basilan and Lamitan City.

Through the participation of its faculty members, NIGS contributes to UP Diliman's commitment to extension and public service, bringing its expertise to an initiative that seeks to empower educators and strengthen Mathematics and Science education in Basilan. The program also highlights the role of academic institutions in fostering knowledge-sharing and collaboration with local communities, that supports the development of more capable educators and better learning opportunities for students.
