UP NIGS faculty member Dr. Leo T. Armada presented the extension initiatives of the Seismic Scanning of Philippine Fault Splays for Marine Geohazards (SeiScan_PH) project during the Saliksikhay-Saliksik Diwa: Research, Innovation, Development, and Extension (RIDE) Festival 2026, held on 15 September 2026 at Aldaba Hall, University Theater Complex. SeiScan_PH is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), with its extension activities supported by a grant from the UP Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Development (OVCRD).

SeiScan_PH addresses critical gaps in our understanding of offshore faults and associated geohazards in the Central Philippines. Through geophysical imaging and investigations, the project aims to characterize fault structures beneath the surrounding seas and assess their potential geohazard implications. In collaboration with local government units, disaster risk reduction agencies, and other stakeholders, the project translates scientific findings into accessible hazard information to improve awareness of active and potentially seismogenic faults, their role as earthquake sources, and the cascading hazards they may trigger.

During his presentation, Dr. Armada emphasized that effective geohazard education goes beyond conventional lectures and information dissemination. It requires sustained stakeholder engagement, hands-on demonstrations, and integrating scientific knowledge with local experiences and contexts. Through these approaches, SeiScan_PH seeks to bridge the gap between geophysical research and practical applications, support informed local decision-making, strengthen disaster risk reduction efforts, and build the resilience of vulnerable island and coastal communities.

Through projects such as SeiScan_PH, NIGS continues to extend its expertise beyond the Institute by connecting research with community engagement, knowledge-sharing, and efforts to strengthen understanding of geohazards.
