The National Institute of Geological Sciences (UP-NIGS) conducted a First Aid Awareness Seminar for its students on 09 June 2025 at NIGS Multipurpose Room. The training aims to equip students with awareness about the importance of first aid and to empower them with the confidence to act quickly and effectively during emergency situations, especially during their upcoming fieldworks.
The training started with the introduction of speakers from University of the Philippines - Red Cross Youth, Ms. Gracielle Love M. Daguimol, Ms. Ysabel C. Lina, and Ms. Kyle Joy F. Bandoy, who tackled introduction to first aid, wound care and bleeding control, musculoskeletal injuries, heat-related illnesses and dehydration, and other environmental injuries and bites.
As part of the training, students engaged in hands-on first aid practice for musculoskeletal injuries, focusing on sprains. Some acted as injured individuals while others took on the role of first aid responders. They also learned how to perform splinting for fractures using improvised materials like umbrellas, which can be useful in emergency situations.
The seminar concluded with students becoming well-equipped with a mindset of preparedness, compassion, and action which could help them save a life, support someone in distress, or stay calm and effective in a moment of crisis, particularly in the field.
