PAGES is a global network of researchers and scientists who study the various processes that relate to key components of the Earth system (e.g., atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, land surface, biosphere and society). These include phenomena covering all timescales, from millions of years ago up to the present. PAGES launched various initiatives with its several working groups (e.g., Climate Variability Across Scales, Early Career Network), publications (PAGES Magazine and Horizon), and scientific partners (Swiss Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Bern).

On May 21 to 24 of this year, PAGES held its flagship event, the 7th Open Science Meeting, with the theme "Earth System Changes from the Past towards the Future" at Shanghai Fuyue Hotel in Shanghai, China. The conference showcased recent research and findings related to the aforementioned areas of interest with the goal of improving predictions for future climate and environment by means of proxy methods and modelling. Particularly, there were a total of 31 sessions convened, covering fascinating topics such as human traces and rapid cultural change events in natural archives, drivers of sea-level and ice-sheet variability, scaling the climate system into climate, macroclimate (~100 kyr), and megaclimate (~1 Myr) and many more.  With over 900 participating scientists and students from 50 countries, the event also succeeded in promoting interdisciplinary scientific exchange and international collaboration among the PAGES communities.

With support from the University and its REPS Development Fund, Joeven Calvelo was able to attend the conference and present a part of his MS thesis as a poster entitled “Coccolithophore-environment relationship in the Western Pacific Ocean: Insights from a compiled surface sediment dataset”.

Aside from meeting his co-adviser Dr. Iván Hernández-Almeida, he was also able to meet and greet colleagues of the Nannoworks Laboratory such as Dr. Amos Winter, a prominent coccolithophore expert, Dr. Zhifei Liu, the current director of State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology and one of the local organizing committee co-chairs; Dr. Masanobu Yamamoto and Dr. Yair Rosenthal, former crewmates during the IODP Expedition 363; and Dr. Xiang Su, a member of the Nannofossil Lab in Tongji University.
