The National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) received 28 geological compasses from the Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP) on 25 August 2026 at the NIGS Admin Office, University of the Philippines Diliman. The donation will support the Institute’s academic and field-based activities by providing additional geological equipment for use by NIGS students and the broader NIGS community.

This donation was made possible through proceeds from the 2025 post-GEOCON Fieldtrip to the Baguio Mineral District, which was co-organized by NIGS through Dr. Jillian Gabo-Ratio. The field trip was facilitated by Mr. Leo Subang of Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company, with assistance from NIGS student organizations, the UP Cwm Zena'na, UP Geological Society, UP Geology Majors Society, and UP Iuvenis Orbis Geological Fraternity. The activity was also supported by Itogon Suyoc Mineral Resources, Inc. and Philex Mining Corporation.
GSP Vice President Ms. Mary Rose Gabuyo formally turned over the geological compasses to NIGS.

NIGS extends its sincere appreciation to the Geological Society of the Philippines for this generous donation and for its continued support of geological education and field-based learning. The donated equipment will help enhance the Institute’s resources for geological instruction and field activities.
