The National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), College of Science, University of the Philippines Diliman, proudly recognizes its graduate student who successfully defended her thesis during the third quarter of 2025.
Ms. Mariz L. Alcancia defended her Master’s thesis titled “Spatio-temporal Variations of Intrusive Rocks in Northern Zambales and Pangasinan: Clues on the Eocene Tectonic Evolution of Southeast Asia” on 12 September 2025 at the NIGS Seminar Room and via Zoom. Her study, advised by Dr. Betchaida D. Payot, provides new insights into the tectonic and magmatic history of western Luzon and its implications for the region’s geologic evolution.
Her thesis panel included Dr. Gabriel Theophilus V. Valera as reader, and Dr. Sandra G. Catane and Dr. Jenielyn T. Padrones as examiners. The defense was endorsed by Dr. Noelynna T. Ramos, NIGS Director, and authorized by Dr. Deo Florence L. Onda, OIC-Dean of the College of Science.
Throughout this quarter, NIGS continues to uphold its strong tradition of academic excellence and research leadership through the successful completion of graduate defenses. These milestones reflect the dedication of its students and faculty advisers in advancing geological sciences research in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
Congratulations to our graduate student and mentors for their outstanding work and scholarly contributions!
