Finding Harmony in “Concordia”: NIGS Welcomes Its Newest Batch of Geologists
2025 Freshies, Shiftees, and Transferees Welcome Assembly and Blockhandling Events
The National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) officially opened the academic year with two electrifying welcome events for its incoming Freshies, Shiftees, and Transferees (FSTs) — a celebration of unity, discovery, and the shared pursuit of science under pressure.
On September 8, 2025, the NIGS Freshie Welcome Assembly themed “Concordia” transformed the NIGS Audio-Visual Room into a cosmic concert of light and camaraderie. With the tagline “find your harmony,” students were invited to meet their peers, engage in interactive games, and immerse themselves in the vibrant culture of NIGS. From the flashing lights to the upbeat energy, “Concordia” reflected the fusion of individuality and community that defines the Institute.
Preceding this was “GEOrassic Park: Blockhandling 2025” on August 30, 2025, where incoming students explored the prehistoric world of NIGS organizations — discovering a thriving ecosystem of friendship, mentorship, and academic support.
Both events were organized by the NIGS Representatives and the College of Science Student Council (CSSC), in collaboration with the Institute’s student organizations:
- Iuvenis Orbis Geological Fraternity (IOGF)
- UP Geological Society (UP GeoSoc)
- UP Geology Majors’ Society (UP GeMS)
- UP Cwm Zena’na
- UP Rockhounds
Together, these groups created a memorable introduction to life at NIGS — complete with laughter, games, and a serving of Soda Pop for everyone.
Through “Concordia” and “GEOrassic Park,” the NIGS community once again proved that while rocks may form under immense pressure, geologists are forged through friendship, shared purpose, and the unyielding drive to explore the Earth — and beyond.
