The Geohazards and Fault Mapping – Technical Working Group (GeoFAM-TWG), which includes members of the Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) and Dr. John Dale Dianala of the Earthquake Geodesy and Geology Laboratory (EGG), actively participated in a follow-up interagency meeting to discuss ongoing initiatives in landslide assessment and the establishment of a national landslide inventory and database for the Philippines. Aside from researchers and technical personnel from NIGS, PHIVOLCS and MGB, a group of researchers from the University of the Philippines Los Baños – School of Environmental Science and Management (UPLB-SESAM) headed by Dean Decibel Faustino-Eslava has also joined the GeoFAM-TWG. The meeting was held on May 12, 2026, at the Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Central Office.
The GeoFAM-TWG is composed of researchers and technical staff from NIGS, MGB, PHIVOLCS and UPLB-SESAM.
The meeting highlighted ongoing efforts in probabilistic landslide hazard mapping, data validation, and the integration of geospatial datasets across institutions. Discussions focused on the development of operational landslide early warning systems and the formulation of a standardized framework for a unified national geohazard database. These initiatives were identified as key priorities to strengthen interagency coordination and enhance disaster risk reduction efforts.
The GeoFAM-TWG meeting underscored the value of sustained collaboration among government agencies, academic institutions, and research groups in advancing probabilistic hazard assessment, improving geohazard forecasting capabilities, and supporting the development of more effective early warning systems for the Philippines.
