Empowering Women in Geosciences: Highlights from the UP Cwm Zena’na July–September 2025 Activities

The UP Cwm Zenana, conducted its flagship event, the 40th Annual Board Review 2025, in the months of July to September, as well as other events, such as send-off, blockhandling and applicant’s orientation. 


JULY

Online Diagnostic Exam and Discussion

Diagnostic Exam Day 1 Discussion - General Geology, Live via Zoom.

The online diagnostic exam spans for three (3) days, June 30 to July 2, 2025. It consists of three 100-item exams, which aims to test the stock knowledge in Geology that the reviewees have gained for the years in college. After the exam is taken, it is followed by a discussion for all the right answers, from July 3 to 4 and 9, 2025.

 

Online Lectures 

Optical Mineralogy Lecture, Live via Zoom.

Online lectures on thirteen (13) geological subjects were held online via Zoom from July 7 to 31, 2025. Experts and esteemed professionals in different fields of geology were invited as lecturers.


AUGUST

Face-to-face Lectures 

Geology of the Philippines and Southeast Asia Lecture at AIT Lobby (left) and Igneous Petrology Lecture at NIGS MPR (right).

Face-to-face discussions on twenty-nine (29) lecture subjects were conducted at the Multi-purpose Room of the National Institute of Geological Sciences and some at the Asian Institute of Tourism - Lobby, following the online lectures.

 

Send-Off

This was a 2-day event organized by the resident members for the recently graduated members. It serves as a celebration of their successful academic and organizational journey. It was held from August 16 to 17, 2025 in Tagaytay. 


FST Blockhandling

 

This was a collaborative event of all NIGS COOL Organizations on August 30, 2025, to introduce the incoming freshies, shiftees, and transferees to the NIGS organizations and their annual activities. 

 

SEPTEMBER

Agency Visits

The pictures above were taken during the Agency Visit at GeoInnovative Specialist Inc. in Antipolo, Rizal.

As part of the organization's goal to serve the geosciences community, Cwm Zena'na Board Review 2025 spearheaded both online and face-to-face agency visits to provide the 162 board reviewers this year with well-rounded knowledge of the workplace and the real-life expectations of being in the workforce. The face-to-face agency visits included GeoInnovative Specialists Inc. (September 2, 2025), the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (September 9, 2025), and PHIVOLCS (September 10, 2025). Meanwhile, the agency visit for the Department of Energy (September 4, 2025) was conducted online through a pre-recorded presentation.

 

Face-to-face Laboratory Discussion

Among the twenty-nine (29) face-to-face discussions, the laboratory components of selected geology subjects, such as Mineralogy, Petrology, Metamorphic Geology, Structural Geology, and Metalliferous Ore Deposits, were conducted at the Multi-purpose Room of the National Institute of Geological Sciences from September 3 to 13, 2025.

 

Meet the PRBG

Meeting the Professional Regulatory Board of Geology members is open to all Geology Licensure Examination takers, even if they are not enrolled in the Cwm Zena’na Geology Board Review. This is the chance for the GLE takers to ask questions and interact with the board members. This event was held on September 15, 2025, face-to-face, at Institute of Biology - Auditorium.

Applicant’s Orientation


As part of the application process, an orientation was conducted on September 25, 2025, open to undergraduate female geology majors (with invited second- and third-year students and open to all first-year students). The orientation aimed to introduce the organization, explain the application requirements, and guide aspiring members through the process.

 

Mock Exam and Discussion

To evaluate the knowledge and competencies acquired by the reviewees throughout the board review, a Mock Examination was administered on September 22–24, 2025. The activity was conducted in both online and face-to-face modalities due to inclement weather conditions during the said period. Then, Mock Exam Discussions were subsequently held on September 25–27, 2025.
