On February 14, 2025, the Nannoworks Laboratory, Paleontological Society of the Philippines, UP Geology Alumni Association, Inc., and the National Institute of Geological Sciences hosted a tribute event to honor Dr. Priscilla Militante-Matias for her pioneering contributions to paleontology in the Philippines. The program opened with heartfelt remarks from Dr. Alyssa M. Peleo-Alampay, one of Dr. Militante-Matias’s earliest research associates. This was followed by a series of testimonials from former students who have since established distinguished careers in geosciences: Dr. Leopoldo P. de Silva, now a professor and foraminifera expert at NIGS; Dr. Lawrence Zamoras, a supervising geologist at the Mines and Geosciences Bureau and a radiolaria specialist; and Ms. Milagros Reyes, President of PetroEnergy Resources Corp. Two young geologists, Meyrick Tablizo and Gerard Gomez, also gave insights about their recent work on stegodons and foraminifera respectively, showcasing the ongoing progress of Philippine Paleontology.
An open mic segment provided space for alumni across generations to share memories and stories, reflecting the lasting impact of Dr. Militante-Matias’s mentorship and legacy. The event concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Betchaida Payot, then Officer-in-Charge of NIGS.
The event not only celebrated the career of a trailblazer but also underscored the vibrant and evolving field of paleontology in the Philippines that continues to be shaped by her influence.
