Ongoing Research Projects

As of First Semester AY 2025-2026

At the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), research is more than just uncovering the Earth’s secrets—it is about shaping a more sustainable future. As of the first semester of Academic Year 2025–2026, ongoing projects have been mapped against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showing how science directly contributes to tackling humanity’s most pressing challenges: poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental sustainability.

The chart shows that most projects strongly contribute to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) with 19 studies, and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) with 18. Significant work also supports SDG 13 (Climate Action) with 10 projects, while SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) each have 5. Other SDGs, including poverty reduction, quality education, clean water, and life below water, are also represented.
